Firefox 4 beta 9 now available to download

Mozilla has just released the latest version of Firefox 4 Beta. As we're now into the closing stretch, there aren't any new or exciting features with this release -- just tweaks and bug fixes. The bookmarks and history code has been overhauled, which will improve browser startup and bookmarking speed (was bookmarking ever slow?). Per-compartment garbage collection has also been enabled, which improves the efficiency of complex animations.

As we reported earlier this week, Firefox 4 is hopefully on target for an end-of-February release. There's still one more beta to pump out, though, and then a release candidate or two. A little bird tells me that the final build of Internet Explorer 9 might also appear around the same time, too...

Help save the earth in Survivosaur -- Time Waster

Everybody knows how the dinosaurs became extinct - you know, the big meteor and everything. But did it really have to happen? How would things have gone had you been there, dressed up as a huge dinosaur with a jet-pack and all sorts of projectiles, ready to save the day? Great question, and that's exactly what Survivosaur strives to answer.

The jet-pack is only the beginning here - you, the dino-protagonist, are tricked out to the max with alternative weapons, an optional shield, extra health and more. You use this massive arsenal to shoot at oncoming meteors and explode them in space, thus preventing the extinction of yourself and your kind. But not everything that comes from space is bad - you get bonuses (those little dollars flying in the screenshots), as well as health packs.

Once you amass enough lucre (say, $10), you can hit SPACE and access the in-game accessory store, where you get all of those fancy power-ups I just mentioned. Gameplay is super-simple - you run (or rather, circle the globe) with the arrow keys, and aim and fire with the mouse. But thanks to the power-up system, this game is surprisingly engaging.

Trend Micro thinks Android's open source makes it less secure than iOS; wrong!

In an odd move that must surely raise concerns of lucidity, the Trend Micro chairman, Steve Chang, has claimed that the open-source nature of Android makes it easier to hack than iOS: "Android is open-source, which means the hacker can also understand the underlying architecture and source code."

News just in: the open-source-is-less-secure myth was dispelled more than a decade ago. Take a look at Linux, Apache, Firefox, or Chrome -- four huge open-source projects, and all many times more secure than their closed-source brethren (Windows, IIS, Internet Explorer). Open source projects are more secure than closed-source projects due to peer and code review, and vested interest! Trend Micro fails to appreciate that while maybe a handful of people have seen the iOS source, thousands have eyeballed Android's innards to look for bugs. Don't forget that Android is also based on Linux, which must be one of the most rigorously tested pieces of software ever made.

Later in the interview, Chang even goes on to mention the iOS sandbox "that isolates the platform"... which Android also has!

Anyway, Chang's ultimate point is that as smartphones become more intrinsic to our everyday life, their security becomes an ever-growing concern. Smartphones need to be treated as real computers, and locked down in the same way; either by the platform, or with third-party software. There will come a point, in the next few years, when smartphone OSes receive even more attention from malware authors than Windows -- we need to be ready.
